Rules and FAQs

Rules for Team Members

Welcome to [community profile] lands_of_magic! The following is a brief, but hopefully thorough, guide to your time here. Of course, if you have any questions not answered in this guide, please feel free to contact any member of your Mod Team:

Owner/Mod/Winter Court Captain
» » MC/ [personal profile] laurapalmer

Summer Court Captain
» » Erin/ [personal profile] erinm_4600

To be assigned to one of our teams ([community profile] the_summer_court and [community profile] the_winter_court), you must fill out the survey HERE. You will usually be given your first choice of team unless the teams get wildly out of proportion. If there are any special circumstances (for example: you really, really want to be on the same team as an existing member), please make sure to mention it in the “Anything Else” section of the survey. When you’re accepted into the community, a mod will respond to your comment with some basic information, and you will be invited to join [community profile] lands_of_magic and its sub-communities. Please do not attempt to join the comms; new members will only be accepted through the invitation system, so please be patient. If you have any issues at all with the application and acceptance procedure, please do not hesitate to contact the mods, either by responding to your original application comment thread or at this post.

[community profile] lands_of_magic's focus is on all fandoms, including music, movies, books, tv, sports, and celebrities. You may use any media from any fandom and stock images. HOWEVER, YOU MAY NOT USE: political, social, civil, or religious issues; political, social, or civil activists; or religious clergy. Other exceptions will be added as they come up.

» NO HARASSMENT: There is no call and no excuse for bullying, name calling, flaming another member's work, petty gossip, and general bad behavior. Any complaints will be investigated and dealt with on a case by case basis.

» NO FANDOM BASHING: This should be obvious since this community embraces all kinds of fantasy fandoms. Of course, there may be a series or characters that you do not like (and you are entitled to that opinion, naturally), but being rude and/or hurtful is never acceptable.

» SPOILER POLICY: Any posts containing references to the most recent episode of a television show must have warnings for spoilers and must be entirely contained within a spoiler cut until eight days after the episode’s first airing. Posts referencing new movies must have spoiler warnings until a month after its theatrical release. New books should be treated as spoilers until a month after their release dates.

» ADULT CONTENT POLICY: This community is rated as having adult themes, and is open to DreamWidth members 14 and older. All posts should be kept to about a PG-13 rating (MPAA Rating Guide HERE). Rules for fanworks will be posted in those sub-communities

Most challenges start on Fridays and open for at least a week (the voting phase of any contest will be open for at least 3 days), though some may last longer. All due dates will be given with the details of each individual challenge.

The point of [community profile] lands_of_magic is a challenge community. The point of the challenges is to earn points for your team, and the team with the most points at the end of the round will win. There are several ways to earn points for your team:

» » Challenges (including promotion/referrals and points for voting in any contest)
» » Signature Tags. Signature tags are 300px by 150px graphic banners which have your name and your team on them. If you use one when submitting your entries, you’ll receive an extra point.

» » All work you submit for points must be entirely your own work. Refrain from manipulating other people's work, such as Tumblr graphics and gifs made by others, as source images for your work.
» » All of your work must be posted on Dreamwidth. Do not use other sites, such as Tumblr or AO3 to post your entries to challenges. You may absolutely also post your work there, but for the sake of entering the challenge, post your work to Dreamwidth.
» » Your challenge entries must be new and never posted before. Works in progress you complete in time for the challenge are okay as long as they have not been posted before anywhere online.

In between rounds, the mods will do a member cut based on participation. In order to escape the cut, all you have to do is participate in at least one points-earning activity per round. If you are aware that you will not be able to participate for an extended period (generally more than 2 months), please be sure to comment to the CONTACT YOUR MODS post HERE. This will let the mods and your team captain know that you intend on coming back, you just can't at the moment. It will also save you from being cut at the end of the round if you have not participated.

If you need to leave the community altogether, please comment to the same CONTACT YOUR MODS post. We will be sorry to see you go, but it is understandable that members will at some point choose to leave. If you ever wish to rejoin the community, simply comment at the Assignment post, and you will be readmitted.

» What size are signature tags?
300px wide by 150px wide. No one will be measuring, so 298x152 is no big deal, but anything noticeably different will not count.

» Is there any special place I need to host my entries for challenges?
Every challenge will have its own instructions for submitting, but as far as hosting things like graphics, you are free to choose any site you like. It's a personal preference. If a challenge calls for anonymity, we trust our members not to cheat and snoop on other people's image links. However, all posts you make for challenges must be posted on Dreamwidth. Please do not post anything on other sites, such as Tumblr or AO3.

» Are mods able to participate in/earn points in challenges?
Mods are able to participate and earn points in any challenge except those in which they have knowledge of the answers (ie, trivia, crosswords) or other challenges where they somehow have an unfair advantage. This will basically affect me since I write the challenges.

» What am I allowed to post in the main comm/my team comm/[community profile] the_full_court?
Posting in the main comm is limited to the mods. You will not have posting access there. Posts in your team comm are pretty much open, though they should focus on comm stuff mostly. [community profile] the_full_court has its own rules, so please make sure you check those out before posting.

For whatever reason I didn't spot this when I first read the FAQ. I'm a little confused... This implies that you want - as an example - an entire story posted directly to the Challenge page. I tend to post fiction ONLY to AO3 and then link to the story even on my own personal DW as then I only have ONE place to apply any story/spelling mistakes spotted at a later date. Is that not allowed?
inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on September 11th, 2017 06:21 pm (UTC)
The reason challenge entries need to be posted to DW is so that I can check them easily for points-counting purposes, that's why we have [community profile] the_full_court, so everyone can post stuff they don't necessarily want to post in a personal journal. I understand that it can be a headache, especially if you're talking about a longer work, but know that 99% of what the challenges will call for here will be drabbles or slightly longer. Challenges are generally open for two weeks to a month, so I'd be okay with you taking down your entries or changing them to links after the points are counted. Also, if we stay a smallish community I can take a look at this rule going forward for future rounds.

Also, thank you for asking instead of just doing it! That's so much nicer than most people! ♥

Dumb question, but is this an all varieties comm, or just for artwork?
inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on September 15th, 2017 02:00 pm (UTC)
Not a dumb question at all! There will be challenges for writing, graphics, games, and some where you can do misc. things like fan mixes or crafts. We try to cater to everyone's interests at least a little bit.

Is there any difference between the two teams aside from name? O:

Nope, none at all. :)

What happens if I have only just come to the realisation that I don't have the level of skill for most of the challenges? :(

I can't write, I can't make animated icons/gifs, and I don't have the skills to make really shiny looking wallpapers.

Should I just opt out now and let another person with more knowledge and skill take my place? I don't want to let my team down because I can't do a lot of the more graphic or writing based challenges?
inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on October 7th, 2017 02:05 am (UTC)
It's really more about having fun and doing things just because you want to. If you feel like you're not going to have any fun, then you can always bow out, but we'll also have games and things like that so don't feel like you have to. All in all, it's all up to you and how you feel.
Green_Wing: Much Ado - Beatrice/Benedict[personal profile] green_wing on October 7th, 2017 02:15 am (UTC)
Ok, I'll do my best and see what I can actually participate in (I don't really want to leave, I joined to have fun)

Is The Good Place acceptable? It's a comedy but also a fantasy?

inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on November 3rd, 2017 06:55 pm (UTC)
That is a good question! Based on the fact that the entire plot would fall apart without the supernatural elements, yes, it's acceptable.
starfleetbrat[personal profile] starfleetbrat on August 13th, 2018 01:26 pm (UTC)
Just a quick question, this post says "ALL fandoms" but the welcome post says "a multi-fandom challenge comm, specializing in magical, supernatural, sci-fi, horror, and superhero fandoms." I just want to make sure if the "all" just means all magical, sci-fi. horror etc or if it means any fandom at all even ones that fall outside of those. (Crime, comedy etc) Sorry if that's a stupid question, I just want to make sure I understand correctly.
inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on August 13th, 2018 05:21 pm (UTC)
Not a stupid questions at all! Thank you for catching that- we actually just changed to all fandoms from specializing in fantasy, etc., so I just forget to edit the welcome post.

Thanks again!

Is original work welcomed?
inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on January 21st, 2019 05:34 pm (UTC)
Sure, as long as it's fictional!
ren: Isabela[personal profile] anxiousgeek on January 21st, 2019 07:55 pm (UTC)
huzzah. I write fanfiction but I'm writing a lot of original stuff right now to.
stefanyeah: DR1_Teaser[personal profile] stefanyeah on January 29th, 2019 10:37 pm (UTC)
Tempted to join in, although I don't yet have a fair idea of what's expected apart from having fun together.

So, I usually take my favourites band members and throw them into AU fantasy settings, writing stories and sometimes doing drawings. That'd be okay for participating?
Also, there's challenges, I do something for them, they get rated somehow and my team gets points?

However, all posts you make for challenges must be posted on Dreamwidth. Please do not post anything on other sites, such as Tumblr or AO3.
But once the challenge is over, can I add stories to AO3? It is a handy archive to have everything in one place after all.

And what does landcomm mean? Questions, questions so late after work. :P
inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on January 29th, 2019 11:00 pm (UTC)
Basically, every week there will be at least one challenge where you will be asked to do something specific based on the theme of the challenge. You are usually allowed to choose either fic or graphics, but sometimes the challenges are for either/or. You are allowed to participate as frequently/infrequently as you like (though more is always better), so if a certain challenge doesn't jibe with you, no problem.

To answer your specific questions, yes, your AUs would be fine. (also, challenge points are mostly scored on a participation basis).

Yes, after the challenge, you can post your stuff anywhere. It just needs to be on DW to begin with so I can easily score the points.

Landcomm is just a term from way back on livejournal from when there were a lot of these types of comms and they were all named "XYZ_Land" like "Stargate_Land," "Liars_Land," "SleepyHollowLand," etc, so they just all got lumped together as "landcomms."
stefanyeah: Jack[personal profile] stefanyeah on January 29th, 2019 11:11 pm (UTC)
Alright-y. Joining in then. :D

Thanks for the answers. :)

I mostly only stayed in that one fandom and with partipants slowly but surely waning, I find myself trying to broaden my horizons. And also I need a bit of encouragement to get creative and out of my current buggered work-life-balance. Challenges and prompts that can be filled with drawings are ideal. :D
Cloud[personal profile] divinemusings on January 31st, 2019 09:54 pm (UTC)
Really quick question: Are we allowed to post original stories? Like stuff that takes place in our own original universe? Thanks. :)
inabsentialuci[personal profile] laurapalmer on January 31st, 2019 11:13 pm (UTC)
Yes, that's fine, as long as it's fictional.
